Annoying fridge humming from upstairs

We have a basement flat which we have just converted, moving the bedroom to the rear which is underneath upstairs' kitchen. I was concious of noise from above so even though the ceiling is lower there, I asked my builder to do what he thought would help with this. He put rockwool between the joists, then overboarded with fireboards. He then fixed 2x3 battons and an extra ceiling layer with regular plasterboards which were plastered over.

The problem is that when we go to sleep, all we can hear is upstairs' fridge humming, it drives us crazy. I've been upstairs on two occasions and fiddled about putting thick carpet pieces underneath the fridge but nothing has worked.

The room also has a perculiar echo, considering how small it is and sometimes it's odd just having a conversation! We really need some help with this, it's driving us mad!

Hi, thanks for the prompt reply!

Can I ask what you mean about lagging the ducting? The main cause of noise is the small motor on the bottom rear of the fridge which is extremely close to their floor, upstairs. I have tried thick carpet underneath the fridge, but would you say this product would work simply sitting the fridge on top of that instead, or is that not how it is designed to work?

My worry is the unusual acoustics in the room which have only become apparant once my builder installed a lowered ceiling using these hard 'fireboards'. Do you think this could actually be contributing to the problem?

Would you have anyone who could visit us in the Brighton area to look at the problem?

I am sorry we posted the wrong response to your question.

It sounds as if you have two problems here. One is flanking noise with the noise being transmitted directly through the fabric of the building and the other is reverberated noise due to it reflecting off the hard surfaces within the room. The flanking noise can be reduced by installing one of our Anti-vibration mats beneath the appliance and install soubnd absorbing material such as our 25mm black film faced self-adhesive foam onto the wall immediately behind the fridge. You may also have to consider installing sound absorption onto other areas of the walls and ceiling if the noise has not been reduced enough by the installation of the above.

Thank you ever so much, that sounds quite promising. I'd like to order these two products, so could you just confirm they are the ones I have detailed below?

Sound absorbant for wall behind fridge:
    SA25SA - 25mm thick with a self adhesive back

    Anti vibration mat:
