HI,
I have moved into a 1985 semi detached house and unfortunatly my neighbours with 3 teenage kids are very sociable until late every weekend. I have a young son and so am up early most days so as you can see our lifestyles are different. The main problem is out bedroom which we as most people want it too be very quiet too relax. The problem is out neighbours have a conservatory at the rear of their house which lets noise out through the roof especially when they are shouting and playing music loudly. I think I can live with noise through windows and and expect heavy curtain will help with this.
The problem was the noise travelling up from downstairs and through the wall into our bedroom.
This what we have done so far.
1) 50mm Battons screwed to the wall,
2) infill with AMW 100, Rockwool branded slabs.
3) accoustic membrane 1.2mm thick stapled to the battons,
4) resilliant bars, 25mm in from the edge of the wall and screwed at 600mm centres
5) 2 layers of 15MM soundblock plasterboard, both layers accousticlly sealed around the edges.
We thought this would elimiate and good amount of the noise but does not appear to have done so. We put our ears to the wall and we can still feel the vibrations fo the sound.
We have spent so far £500 + trying to resolve this.
I do plan to do the same to room below, will this help. I must say the noise is mainly irritating when in the bedroom because we want piece and quite with no sound intrusion through the wall, and what we hear in tinny voices etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Paul
Soundproofing results not ideal - Did I order the right products?

Hi Paul,
We are very sorry to hear you have not obtained the results you were hoping for.
It would appear you have used some of the wrong products in the work you have already done which may be the reason you are not happy with the results.
The Acoustic Membrane should only be used on ceilings and it does not offer enough mass for use on walls. You have also said you have used 100mm thick mineral wool in a gap that is only 50mm. If you have rammed this in and not fit it as per our advice then it could become rather pointless as it will become part of the whole structure rather than absorbing sound as it should do. Also was the mineral wool bought from us? If not what is the density of it?
Also there should be at least one layer of our Soundproofing Mat inbetween the plasterboard layers.
The system we would have advised you on is our Studio Wall System http://www.keepitquiet.co.uk/studio-w... -

Thank you for your response.
The mineral wool I used was 50mm in depth and has a density of 100kg m3. I thought the higher the density the better.
If I were to add a third layer of plasterboard and underneath add the SMB5 matting how much of an improvement do you think we would have? Would it block all sound? Also when using the SMB5 matting do they get butted next to each and sealed with anything or just butted next to each other? Then covered in a layer of plasterboard?
Thanks

Hi Paul,
Whilst we understand you have embraced soundproofing in your home, it would appear you have not followed our advice on the product combinations that you have used.
Putting specific soundproofing products together to form a 'system' that works is an exact science as each component has a job and is selected carefully.
Using 100kg Mineral Wool for example is actually worse than using the 45kg that we suggest. The reason for this is that it's just too dense! If you think of it like a sponge, it needs to absorb sound. If you make it too dense then it cannot function. This is be part of your problem I would think.
I think at this stage you need to consult with one of technical team, which with hindsight might have been an idea before you started the project.
Please email tech@soundservice.co.uk and mark it for the attention of Stephen Young. It is important you explain the noise issue in detail and what you have already done to try and fix it.
I will inform him you are going to email.
I am sure we can help you fix this issue in some way. -
