How do I soundproof between floors?

I am looking to acoustically and ideally thermally insulate between the floors of a house I am renovating. The floor/ ceiling area is approx 40m2 and has an available depth of approx 8" except where pipes and wires are run which may reduce it to 4" in places. I would also like to acoustically proof the internal walls upstairs which are yet to be built and therefore have no predetermined thickness but will have a total area of approx 50m2.

Please can you advise on the best products for the jobs, It will be used as a normal house but with variable bedtimes etc. NOT a recording studio or similar. Cost is an issue, but not a decider as I intend to live in this house for at least the next 30 years. Approximate costs per square metre for your recomendations would help me.

I will be installing myself, and as a professional builder have experience of most things. All Floorboards will be lifted anyway so solid foam products would be fine to install, Thermal insulation would be a bonus.

There are various levels of soundproofing you can adopt but as you say cost may be an issue, I will just deal with basic soundproofing in this reply. First of all the floors and ceilings. With the ceilings screw 15mm deep Resilient Bars across the underside of the joists at 400 - 450mm centres then screw a double layer of 12.5mm Acoustic Plasterboard to the bars. For an enhanced result you can sandwich between the boards our 1mm SoundBlocker Membrane. Now install 100mm of AMW100 Acoustic Mineral Wool between the joists and fit your flooring as usual. If you are considering installing bare wood floors we have to say that you will be happier with the acoustic properties of carpeted floors. Bare wood floors not only create more impact noise but also more airborne noise due to the additional reverberation created.

With regard to your walls, high density masonry walls wet plastered on both sides will give good results but if they are to be stud walls, the following can be done to upgrade them. Construct them without noggins, just sole plate, top plate and uprights then screw 15mm deep Resilient Bars across one side at 600mm centres from floor to ceiling. The fit a double layer of 12.5mm Acoustic Plasterboard to the bars and for an enhanced result, sandwich between them our 2mm heavier SBM5 Soundproofing Mat. Now you can fit a double layer of Acoustic Plasterboard to the other side of the stud.
