How to soundproof a wooden floor against airborne sound

Hi I’ve recently moved home and live in a common Victorian/Edwardian terraced house in London, upstairs flat with neighbors in flat below. I’ve have just removed our living room carpet and underlay and would like to keep the wood flooring sand, stain and varnish it however I’m aware removing the carpet and underlay will have reduced the sound insulation and will increase the noise coming from below and the noise we create impacting on our neighbors.

I’ve been looking into adding some sound insulation under the floorboards into the ceiling/floorboard cavity between the joists. Doing some research online it appears adding some high density mineral wool (acoustic quilt) under the floor then fixing the floorboards to the joists with a thin membrane between the two and finally sealing the gaps between each floorboard is the way to go. Unfortunately I have a limited budget but is this something you would recommend and can you offer me any guidance and costing for your products?

Our room is 12 foot by 13 foot roughly. There isn’t a massive problem with sound at present but would like to have better sound insulation if possible for the future.

The solution you have come up with will not make a significant difference to the sound insulation of the floor and more noise will still be noticeable by you and your neighbour below. There is not a very efficient solution to compensate for the extra noise and vibration if you want to use the existing floorboards. One solution is that we can offer is to install our SoundBlocker Quilt between the joists with 10mm resilient foam tape isolating the floorboards from the joists. Click the following links for more info on these products.

Alternatively you can install our Silver Floor System if budget allows that will give you better airborne sound insulation. If this system is combined with the Resilient Foam Tape referred to already it will also help reduce impact noise.
