I have an apartment on the ground floor with one above me, between us there is my ceiling, the joists and a chip board floor. The chipboard was originally nailed down and this is now creaking a lot and with absolutely nothing between my ceiling and the upstairs floor, soundproofing is non existent. I can hear every footstep she takes and also hear conversations etc, just as she can hear my TV etc.
Could you advise, roughly, the best approach, bearing in mind the upstairs resident is 92 and her son who owns the apartment is unwilling to have any work done.
From your site I see that I could have all my ceilings ripped out and various materials used to insulate between the joists, what material is best to put in, the Acoustic Mineral Wool or the Soundblocker Quilt or a combination, or something else?
Once the insulation is packed in what else is it best to do to ensure as much sound insulation as possible. Should I also include a Soundblocker Membrane followed by Acoustic Plasterboard mounted on the Resilient Bars?
I’d rather go for overkill to ensure a thorough long lasting job so any advice would be appreciated.
Also, any chance you could give me prices for all the materials based on the following room sizes:-
(If this is too time consuming for you then not a problem but some professional calculations would be helpful for me to take to the meeting)
Hallway - 11’ 6” x 3’ 6”
Lounge - 16’ x 14’ 7”
Kitchen - 10’ 9” x 8’ 6”
Bedroom 1 - 12’ 6” x 12’
Bedroom 2 – 12’ 6” x 11’ 6”
Bathroom – 7’ 10” x 7’
I have no idea on how wide the joists are apart or how deep they are. The place was built mid to late 80’s and assume as a rough guide joists are about 15” deep and just assume the spacing is whatever the current standard is for building. Sorry it sounds so vague but I just need a rough estimate.
Many thanks in advance for any help and advice you can offer and very much look forward to hearing from you.
