Noise coming up from downstairs flat - need to block it as much as possible

I have 1st floor flat. Neighbours below play very loud music and i can hear them talking. I have floorboards in living roo and carpets elsewhere. I want to change living room to a thick plain lino type floor covering and keep carpets. I would prefer not to remove floorboards in carpeted area but am not botheredin living room area. i desperately want not to hear the neighbours as they live antisocial hours, is a victorian maisonette
