I am troubled by low density noise and vibration from a pump or compressor which is outside the house but which we cannot identify. The sound is coming through the floor (can hear it through the pillows and it is a cycle like a compressor or pump) and when it is moving fast it creates vibration through the bed there is also noise like a humming when you stand up although it is worse when laying down.
what do you suggest that we can do.
thanks

Noise like this is always best treated at source but if you do not have access to the source then I think it will be difficult to achieve a significant reduction in the noise nuisance you are experiencing. Any noise that can be heard at night can be annoying and disturb sleep even if it is not loud and low frequency noises that hum are virutally impossible to silence. Your problem is the noise is structure borne through the fabric of your home and it is interesting to see that the noise and vibrations are worse when you are lying down with your head on the pillow. This is despite the fact you will be lying on a mattress that should absorb any vibrations through the floor and walls of your home.
We regret to say that we feel you will not obtain a satisfactory result by installing any form of sound insulation in your bedroom or elsewhere within the home. Your best bet is to locate the source of the noise and see what steps can be taken to soundproof the noise at that point. Get back to us if you identify where the noise is coming from and we will then be pleased to give you advice on how to install sound insulation to it.
