Sound proofing a basement room

Dear Sir,
I would like to insulate a room in my basement where I intend to listen to music (mainly rock). The room is about 20 sqm and 2.6m high and it's adjancent to other 2 rooms (used to store things). I would like to avoid noise going up through the ceiling and likely the echo effect to the other 2 rooms. What is the best solution? PLease note that I am not a very handy person so I am looking for something that can be fitted in pretty easily.
thank you

  • You do not say if the ceiling above is timber suspended so for the purpose of this reply I will assume it is. I will also assume there is limited ceiling height typical of most basements. Bearing this in mind it will not be possible to soundproof the ceiling from the room above as efficiently as it could be but the following should help.

    1. Remove the existing ceiling and screw 15mm deep Resilient Bars across the joists at 400mm centres.
    2. Loosely fit between the joists resting on top of the Res Bars 100mm of AMW Acoustic Mineral Wool. Or for a better result and if budget allows, our more efficient SoundBlocker Quilt that has to be fixed to the sides of the joists prior to installing the R/Bars.
    3. Screw to the bars, ensuring screws miss the wooden joists 15mm of high density Acoustic Plasterboard
    4. Glue to a second sheet of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard our 1mm SoundBlocker Membrane then screw to the ceiling as with the previous board but on top of it.

Do not fit any inset ceiling lights. All lighting must be surface mounted.

Once the ceiling has been finished, sound absorption will be required to reduce the inevitable reverberation that will incur inside the room. The best and most economical way this can be achieved is to install two thicknesses of our Egg Box type sound absorbing foam with the thicknesses randomly installed. As a general rule of thumb you will require enough of this equal to the ceiling area of the room and should be applied to the walls and ceiling alike.

All of these products along with installation instructions can be viewed on our web site.
