whats the best underlay for reducing airborne noise, please help?
hi there, i live in an upper cottage flat in glasgow and the airborne noise that travels through my floor is quite annoying. the neighbours are not overly noisy it is the quality of the buildings that is the problem, that and the fact that the previous owner of my house has used next to no underlay in the livingroom which is giving the most noise. noise that is coming through is tv, coughing and general talking. i am on a very limited budget and am not the best at diy so i was wondering - what would be the best underlay for an existing carpet to reduce airborne noise that can be easily fitted (i will be using a fitter). budget around £300-£400 and room approx 25m2. thank you very much.

There is not an underlay that you can install for your budget that will reduce airborne noise as well as impact noise but what you can do is add layers of our 2mm SBM5 heavy Soundproofing Mats. At least two layers will add mass to the floor that will help reduce airborne noise from below. The more layers you have the more efficient the sound blocking becomes. On top of this you can install your normal underlay and carpet as usual but we suggest you use a felt underlay rather than rubber. Alternatively, if you find you can expand your budget, I suggest you install our 15mm QuietFloor Plus Acoustic Underlay instead of normal underlay and SBM5 mats.
