I am wanting to put some soundproofing material down under a new carpet to reduce airborne noise coming from the floor below. Impact noise is not an issue, it is purely the airborne noise I am interested in reducing.
On that basis, am I likely to get the best result using 3 layers of soundproofing mat, or by instead using Quietfloor Plus? Would you be able to provide some figures to show a comparison of the results I am likely to get please?
Also, do you have any guide to working out the quantity of product I will need to order?
Many thanks for your help.
Which works better for airborne noise reduction, Quietfloor PLUS or Soundproofing Mat?

Thank you for your enquiry. The two products you are considering are totally different from one another. The QuietFloor Plus has a mass of 15kg sq mtr and is nominally 15mm thick and is used as a replacement acoustic underlay instead of normal underlay for carpets. Because it has a sound absorbing resilient infill it is a far more efficient sound barrier material than three layers of SBM5 that would be equal to the same weight. SBM5 is a 2mm heavy mineral loaded sheet that due to its weight, is quite a good sound barrier material. When built up in layers, its soundproofing properties increase but there are no recorded sound test results to show how this compares to the QuietFloor Plus. If the choice was mine, I would install the QuietFloor Plus every time. The link below will take you to our web page where the test results of QuietFloor Plus can be seen.

The following link will take you to the Technical Data page for SBM5 which also includes test data but only for its use on lightweight stud walls when it should be installed sandwiched between two layers of acoustic plasterboard.
